Playable by ear and by eye
LCLVERSE is a story you play by typing, so it should work for blind and low-vision players. This page says what we aim for, what works today, what does not work yet, and how to tell us when something is in your way.

What we aim for
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA, across the site and the story player. No outside audit has been done yet; the lists below are our own account.
What works
Screen reader mode
The first link on every page turns it on. You can also turn it on in Settings under Accessibility, with Alt+Shift+A, or by adding ?a11y=1 to any address. In this mode each scene arrives whole instead of typing itself out, and you hear two short messages a turn: that your move was sent, and that the next scene is ready.
Scene headings
Every turn of the story is a heading, Scene 1, Scene 2 and so on, so you can move through the story by heading and earlier scenes stay where they were.
The Spoken Script
Alt+R reads the newest scene as plain sentences: system panels become "System message" with numbered options, status boxes become short sentences, and symbols, box lines and emoji are turned into words or left out.
Voice controls
The narrator's voice is off until you turn it on, and it never starts by itself. Play, pause, stop and replay are buttons; speed goes from 0.8 times to 3 times; volume has its own control. Typing in the move box stops the voice, and headset and lock-screen keys work. In screen reader mode the voice stays off unless you choose to hear it with your screen reader.
Contrast and text size
A high contrast theme (pure black and white, brighter accents, visible borders), large and extra large text, and a visible focus ring on everything you can reach with the keyboard.
Keyboard shortcuts
In the story player, with screen reader mode on:
- Alt+Shift+A
- Turn screen reader mode on or off.
- Alt+J
- Jump to the newest scene heading.
- Alt+R
- Repeat the newest scene as plain spoken sentences.
- Alt+S
- Read the newest status panel as one or two sentences.
- ?
- Open the list of shortcuts.
Known gaps
- Some worlds draw panels with box-drawing characters. We have not yet checked how every screen reader speaks those panels outside the Spoken Script.
- Outside screen reader mode the narration still types itself out on screen. Screen reader mode, or the reduce motion setting, gives you each scene at once.
- We have not yet tested the site ourselves with NVDA, JAWS or VoiceOver. Blind testers are being invited, and we will list what they find.
- The narrator's voice and your screen reader cannot be coordinated automatically. If you turn on both, pause one before using the other.
Tell us
If something stops you playing, or a screen reader says something it should not, write to us through the contact form or at [email protected]. Say which screen reader or browser you use, and a person will read it.
